Future Cloudy for AUUG
Tuesday, 07 June 2011 17:39

At the June 2011 meeting of the Atlanta Unix Users' Group (AUUG), the future got a bit cloudy on two fronts:

1) AUUG has been meeting for several years in the auditorium of Mirant Corporation. Last year, Mirant merged with a company in Houston, which promptly decided to shut down the Atlanta Mirant offices. The shutdown is almost complete and the auditorium probably won't be available after September 1. This leaves AUUG without a meeting location. See other posts on this site about the difficulty in finding suitable meeting places.

2) The longtime head of AUUG is Lindsay Cleveland. Lindsay announced that he'll be taking the early retirement package that his employer, Cicso Sytems, is offering as of July 2011. Lindsay's wife has been battling a condition that causes cronic pain. Several weeks ago they visited the hill country of east Texas, around Ft. Hood. Her pain was much less during their visit there, probably due to climate. As a result, the Clevelands are starting to plan a move to Texas later this year. This leaves AUUG without its long-time corresponding secretary.

So, can AUUG survive without a meeting location or leader? If so, in what form? Stay tuned.
